Parent Support Groups

Māori Parents

At Newlands Intermediate we provide an opportunity for our Māori parents and caregivers of Māori students to meet once a term. This provides a forum for our parents to voice any concerns or desires they may have for the achievement of our Māori students. We often have Pot Luck Dinners as this encourages people to come and meet other parents within the community and to share a meal together.

Parents' Focus Groups

Home and school links will be strengthened by parents having the opportunity to meet school management to discuss the latest educational trends, issues and developments that make up what we do at Newlands Intermediate School. These meetings are held twice a year.

In 2009, the Parents' Focus Group met to discuss reporting to parents and homework.

Classes are held on weekdays during the school term and at the discretion of the tutor are taught in groups or on a one to one basis.

An end of year concert is held and these evenings are an opportunity for students to entertain family and friends with their progress during the year.

Tuition is offered in violin, piano, guitar and flute.

Violins and flutes are available for hire.

For further information please ring the school.

Performing Groups

Over the years Newlands Intermediate has developed a reputation for its exceptional performance groups. We are proud to offer a variety of cultural groups to cater for different interests. We currently provide the opportunity for our students to participate in the following performance groups:

Kapa Haka, Poly Club, Brio, Orchestra,

NIS Singers

It's In the Bag

This is a fun way to recognise our students who are consistently on task, focussed, hard working, supportive of others, polite, respectful and good role models both in and out of the classroom

HOW IT WORKS

Each day classroom teachers nominate a student that has shown any of these special qualities during the day and that nomination goes on the list for the next "Its In the Bag" assembly.

All nominated students are applauded in this assembly by their peers and teachers and then the names of 5 students are drawn from a bag. These 5 students are then invited to draw from The Bag.

In The Bag are a number of vouchers for Rebel Sports, movies, books, canteen credit, Subway lunches and an ipod shuffle! Five lucky students get one of these prizes every fortnight.

After 5 nominations a student automatically gets to draw from The Bag and automatically wins a prize! Each fortnight classes receive updated lists showing how many nominations each student has.

At the end of each term the reasons for nominations are reviewed by the school Leadership Team to identify some of our students eligible for recognition on Trophy night in areas like Citizenship and Attitude and Effort.

UNIFORM

2009 saw the introduction of our new uniform
It has retained the colour combination of the past but we have chosen a more fashionable and practical design for our students to wear.
Our students have been involved in the process and are very positive about it.
We have also introduced a PE uniform for the students to wear.
Uniform Orders Forms can be found under the Information Packs on the next column.
